One of the things that makes people nervous when they think about printing their books is the bleeds. There really isn't anything to be nervous about though. When you are creating your layout just keep critical elements away from the outer edge. As a general rule of thumb, about 1/4 of an inch at the top and bottom and 1/2 an inch on each side. 

It gets a little tricky though when you are printing a layout that was designed at 12 x 12 out at a smaller size. Say for instance a 6x6 book. Imagine if you left a 1/2 inch safe area in the 12 inch layout. When you reduce the layout to 50% of the width and height then the bleed you left is now only 1/4 of an inch.

Try now to calculate it for a 10x10 or 8x8 book and it can be a little bit nervewracking! So, Wendy to the rescue! Studio Wendy has created a package of page overlays for checking your bleeds.
